Zayn al-Din Umar Ibn al-Wardi, a jurist, judge and man of letters from Maarrat al-Numan, lived in Aleppo under the Mamluks. He is remembered for his “Lamiyya”, a poem of advice to his son that is still learnt by heart in schools across the Arab world, and for a short chronicle. He died in Aleppo of the great plague of 1349.
