The greatest of the metaphysical poets, John Donne wrote in youth witty and passionate love poems, and later the Holy Sonnets. Ordained in 1615, he became Dean of St Paul’s in 1621 and the most famous preacher of his day. The Devotions upon Emergent Occasions (1624) were written during a grave illness.
