Quotes by Montesquieu
French philosopher and writer, 1689–1755
A magistrate from Bordeaux, Charles-Louis de Secondat, baron de Montesquieu, made his name with the Persian Letters (1721), a satire of France seen through the eyes of two travellers from the East. After long travels in Europe he published the Considerations on the Causes of the Greatness of the Romans (1734) and then The Spirit of the Laws (1748), which sets out the separation of powers that inspired modern constitutions.
