Robert Browning perfected the dramatic monologue, in which a character reveals himself unawares, in collections such as Men and Women (1855) and Dramatis Personae (1864), and in the long verse novel The Ring and the Book. In 1846 he secretly married the poet Elizabeth Barrett and carried her off to Italy. He is buried in Westminster Abbey.
