Where there’s a will, there’s a way.

The proverb says that determination finds the means: if you truly want something, you will find a way to achieve it. It is used to encourage someone facing an obstacle, and sometimes, in reverse, to suggest that a person who keeps finding excuses does not really want to succeed.

Its balance of two short clauses, will and way, makes it easy to remember, and it is one of the most common sayings in everyday English, heard in schools, on sports fields and in speeches. It is a reminder that motivation often matters more than circumstances.

Many languages share the idea: French says “Vouloir, c’est pouvoir”, Spanish “Querer es poder”, and German “Wo ein Wille ist, ist auch ein Weg”, which follows the English almost word for word.
