Do you know anyone nobler or greater than the one who builds and nurtures souls and minds?

Arabic original

أعلمت أشرف أو أجل من الذي يبني وينشئ أنفسا وعقولا؟

What it means

Teaching means helping a whole person develop. Building souls and minds joins moral education with intellectual learning, going beyond an accumulation of facts. The question expresses admiration for that task.

The story behind this quote

This second verse explains the tribute to teachers at the beginning of Shawqi’s poem. Its rhetorical question emphasises the dignity of teaching.

The poet uses the language of building for an activity that does not produce buildings. Education develops people, giving teachers lasting responsibility. The verse thus returns to the opening tribute and provides a specific reason for it within the poem’s unfolding argument.
